Architectural Ironmongery Restoration

At L Vickery Building Contractors Ltd, we understand that it’s often the finer details that define a historic property. Architectural ironmongery, from hinges and handles to railings and decorative brackets. These details play a crucial role in preserving a building’s original character.
In a recent restoration project in Ilfracombe, we were tasked with carefully restoring original Victorian ironmongery, bringing it back to life while maintaining its historic authenticity.
Victorian ironwork is renowned for its durability and decorative quality. However, decades of exposure to the elements (especially in a coastal area) can lead to corrosion, paint failure, and surface deterioration.
Rather than replacing these original features, the goal was clear: restore and preserve. To achieve a clean and durable finish, we carried out professional sandblasting to remove:
Layers of old paint
Rust and corrosion
Surface contaminants
Debris built up over time
Sandblasting allows us to strip the metal back to a stable surface without compromising the integrity of the original workmanship. This stage is critical in ensuring long-term adhesion and protection for the new coating.
Once prepared, the ironmongery was treated and repainted in a traditional finish, carefully selected to match the original Victorian aesthetic of the property.
This classic black coating not only restores the authentic appearance but also provides:
Enhanced weather protection
Improved durability
Resistance against future corrosion
A crisp, heritage-appropriate finish
Whether we’re undertaking structural builds, refurbishments, or detailed heritage restoration, our approach remains the same, careful planning, skilled workmanship, and pride in the finished result.
