From 1940s Bungalow to Energy-Efficient Coastal Home | Refurbishment and Extension in Croyde, North Devon

At L Vickery Building Contractors Ltd, we know that the best transformations start with a property that has good bones and a lot of potential. We've recently completed a project in Croyde, where we took an original 1940s bungalow and turned it into a contemporary, energy-efficient home. The work covered a full refurbishment and three new extensions, all delivered by one team, start to finish.

Like many post-war coastal properties, the bungalow had seen better days. Ageing services, failing timber sub-floors and limited insulation meant the building was no longer performing as a modern home should. The aim was to bring it up to a high standard of comfort and efficiency while making the most of its Croyde setting.

Our team carried out the groundworks, civils and drainage, including soakaways, to prepare the site for the extensions and to manage water properly. Inside the property, the original timber floors had failed. We replaced them with new reinforced sub-floors, giving the home a solid, long-lasting base for the finishes above.

The bungalow was extended in three areas, giving the home far more space and a more contemporary layout. Each extension was finished with Sika Sarnafil single-ply roofing, chosen for its durability in an exposed coastal environment.

Structural works were also carried out to support the new layout, allowing walls to be opened up safely and the extensions to be tied into the original building with confidence.

Performance was a key part of the brief from the client. This home now features:

  • Air source heat pumps

  • Underfloor heating

  • Solar PV

  • Insulation to all external walls

  • New glazing, windows and doors throughout

Together, these upgrades reduce running costs and create a comfortable, well-insulated home all year round.

Behind the walls, the property was fully rewired and replumbed, so the electrics and plumbing are safe and reliable for years to come. The finishing touches were a new kitchen and bespoke carpentry throughout, which brought warmth and character to the completed interior.

One of the biggest benefits of this for our client was having a single team manage every stage. From groundworks to the final finishes, our own team handled the planning, coordination and workmanship.

The result is a stylish, efficient home built to last, and a good example of what a well-planned refurbishment can achieve on a 1940s property.

Whether you're planning a full refurbishment, an extension or a complete transformation, our team at L Vickery Building Contractors is always happy to discuss how we can help with your project in North Devon.
